Ongoing protests and severe traffic blockades in Delhi are causing massive financial damage to local businesses. According to the Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), traders in the capital have already suffered an estimated loss of ₹3,000 crore in October alone.
CTI Chairman Brijesh Goyal warned that if the protests and barricading in central areas continue every week, total business losses could cross a staggering ₹10,000 crore by Diwali. The traders’ body has officially appealed to the government to ban all protests in Central Delhi and the Lutyens zone until the festive season is over.
The Financial Breakdown
The blockades have crippled both retail and wholesale markets. Over 700 major markets, including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Connaught Place, and Karol Bagh, have been severely affected.
- Retail Sector: Estimated loss of ₹1,800 crore.
- Wholesale Sector: Estimated loss of ₹600 crore. (An estimated 3 to 4 lakh wholesale buyers from neighboring NCR cities like Gurugram, Noida, and Faridabad could not enter the city).
- Hospitality & Services: ₹300 crore loss.
- Unorganized Sector (Daily wage workers & artisans): ₹120 crore loss.
Why This Matters (Economic Impact)
- MSME Survival is at Risk: For thousands of small businesses and retailers, the Navratri-to-Diwali period generates the majority of their annual revenue. Losing this sales window due to traffic restrictions can force small shops into deep financial debt.
- Dead Inventory & Supply Chain Stress: Because trucks cannot move freely and buyers cannot reach the markets, crores of rupees worth of festive goods are currently stuck rotting in godowns, completely disrupting the local supply chain.
- The Unorganized Sector Hit Hardest: While big businesses lose profits, the ₹120 crore loss in the unorganized sector means daily wage laborers, transport workers, and local artisans are losing their basic daily income right before the biggest festival of the year.
