Almost every piece of writing comes with a limit attached. An assignment must be 1,500 words, a personal statement 500, a meta description 160 characters, a tweet 280. Counting by hand is tedious and guessing is unreliable, so a live count as you write removes the problem entirely.

Alongside the word count you get characters with and without spaces, sentence and paragraph counts, and an estimated reading time based on average adult reading speed. Reading time matters more than word count for blog posts and presentations, where the real question is how long someone will spend.

The count differs from Microsoft Word

Counting rules vary between tools — hyphenated words, numbers and text in headers or footnotes are treated differently. Where a limit is strictly enforced, use the count from the tool your assessor uses.

My paragraph count looks wrong

Paragraphs are detected from line breaks. Text pasted from a PDF often carries broken line endings, which inflates the count.

Reading time seems too fast

The estimate assumes typical adult reading speed for straightforward prose. Technical or dense material takes considerably longer.

Formatting was lost when I pasted

This is a plain-text counter, so styling is stripped. Your original document is unaffected.

Characters with and without spaces differ a lot

That is normal — spaces are a large proportion of any text. Check which one your limit refers to, since platforms differ.

The count did not change

Very short edits may not alter the word count even though characters changed. Watch the character count for fine adjustments.

Writing to a word limit sensibly

• Aim for 90 to 95 percent of the limit rather than exactly on it, since counting methods vary.
• Check whether the limit includes references, footnotes and headings — the rules usually say, and it makes a large difference.
• Cut adverbs and filler phrases first when you need to reduce; they carry the least meaning per word.
• For SEO, check the character count of titles and meta descriptions rather than the word count.
• Use reading time rather than word count when writing for the web, where attention is the real constraint.
• Draft freely and count afterwards. Writing while watching a counter tends to produce stilted prose.

Your file never leaves your device

Counting happens entirely inside your browser as you type, so your text is never transmitted, stored or seen by anyone. This matters most when the document is personal — an Aadhaar or PAN scan, a bank statement, a salary slip, a medical report or a signed contract. With a server-based converter you are trusting an unknown company with that file. Here there is nothing to trust, because the file is never transmitted anywhere.
