Common problems and how to fix them
The documents merged in the wrong order
Reorder them before merging rather than after. Files are not sorted alphabetically by default, so check the list carefully.
The merged file is very large
Merging adds sizes together, it does not compress. Compress the result afterwards if you need it smaller.
One of my files would not load
It is probably password-protected or corrupted. Remove the password first, and try opening the file in a reader to confirm it is intact.
Some pages are rotated the wrong way
Merging preserves each page exactly as it was. Fix the orientation afterwards with Organize PDF.
I only wanted certain pages from a document
Extract them first with Split PDF, then merge the extracted pieces.
The browser slowed down
Merging many large scanned files uses a lot of memory. Close other tabs, or merge in two stages — combine half, then combine the results.
Merging without creating a mess
- Decide the order before you start, especially for applications where the reviewer expects a specific sequence.
- Put the most important document first. Many reviewers only open the first page or two.
- Keep the merged file under the portal's limit by compressing after merging, not by leaving documents out.
- Give the merged file a clear name such as ApplicationDocuments_YourName.pdf rather than merged.pdf.
- If different files use different page sizes, the merged PDF will contain mixed sizes. That is normal and still valid.
- Open the merged file and scroll through it once before submitting.
